ABSTRACT

Infectious disease patients such as those with HIV, AIDS, TB and Leprosy have always been shunned by society. They often face discrimination such as people refusing casual contact and social isolation from the community due to the stigma people hold. These discriminatory actions have a detrimental effect on the patients' emotional and mental health. The effect is reported to other infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Discrimination toward COVID-19 survivors was high in 2021. Despite the sentiments going down in 2022, no studies have been conducted to explore the phenomenon. Hence, this study attempts to understand the causes and effects on the mental health of women COVID-19 survivors. Therefore, the study employed qualitative research to determine the causes and effects on the mental health of women COVID-19 survivors. To arrive at the result, researchers interviewed six COVID-19 survivors that were infected in 2021 and 2022 purposely from civilian, media, and medical practitioners. The result of the study discovered four themes namely 'Public Reaction Towards COVID19 Survivors', 'Survivors' Behaviour During the Mistreatment', 'Mental Health of Survivors facing Public Discrimination', and 'Causes of the Discrimination according to the Survivors' - all of which answered the research question developed. By creating an indicator that recognises early warning systems of potential indicators of conflict, the government may be able to address this issue as well as other potential kinds of discrimination. Besides that, media practitioners must adhere to Peace Journalism elements and Society of Professional Journalists to promote social stability.

ABSTRACT

Much research has been done on cause-related marketing activities implemented by for-profit businesses. However, researchers seem to neglect that the beneficiaries make specific products used in cause-related campaigns, and for-beneficiaries organizations also run specific campaigns. Further research, thus, needs to be done to understand and support these self-help efforts. This study investigated customer attitudes toward products made by people with disabilities – the direct beneficiaries of the generated incomes. By interviewing fifteen female customers in Japan, this study found that the participants had a somewhat positive attitude. They wanted to buy or had bought these kinds of products. The customers' perceptions of product quality were good. However, their perception of product types and production scale was not. The women's perceptions and behaviours, or their attitudes, were affected by several personal and environmental factors. A recent factor, the COVID-19 pandemic, seemed to add some situational impacts. Implications for expanding cause-related marketing theory and improving cause-related marketing activities from the beneficiary perspective were discussed based on these findings. © 2023, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. ABSTRACT

Objectives: The coronavirus disease pandemic affected people's lives in different ways, including child education and parent-child interactions. The present study aimed to identify the educational opportunities of children and challenges of parents during this pandemic. Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative and phenomenological method. The participants were 23 parents of children aged 7-12 years, selected by purposive sampling method. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews, which continued until data saturation was reached, and then classified and processed following Strauss and Glasser's approach. Results: The findings were classified as parenting transformation, attachment challenges, and parenting challenges due to macro-systemic changes. Online education and changes caused by social distancing were the most significant parenting challenges. Moreover, children did not have the necessary space to be independent and self-sufficient. Conclusion: For many children, adapting to virtual education has been challenging; therefore, parents should change their parenting control and support. The emergence of such challenges has led to the creation of more opportunities in the field of child education.

ABSTRACT

Higher education institutions today have offered a range of postsecondary transition programs for adults with.intellectual disabilities (ID). Applying the social-ecological framework, this study was aimed to analyze qualitative data about the experiences and perceptions of physical activity (PA) among eight college students with ID at a post-secondary transition program in the United States. The phenomenological approach was utilized to describe participants' lifeworld experience of PA. Results indicated that the most PA opportunities on campus merely derived from the availability of adapted programs. Only one participant met the minimum requirement of engaging moderate-intensity exercise weekly. Based on the analysis using the social-ecological framework, the results include twelve themes at the intrapersonal level (self-efficacy, personality, emotion, past experiences, knowledge, and time), interpersonal level (family support and friend support), and institutional level (specifically, university recreation center, available adapted programs, adverse weather, and COVID effect) that influenced their PA participation. The current transition program seemed to promote sedentary behaviors during school hours. Strategies to enhance PA engagement for this population should include increasing students and parents' knowledge of PA and health, providing adequate social support from college mentors and more adapted PA opportunities and alternative options on campus. These recommendations could boost PA self-efficacy and overcome barriers at multiple levels in students with ID.Copyright © The British Society of Developmental Disabilities 2023.

ABSTRACT

The process of digital transformation is recognized as a significant shift that requires time and frequently encounters resistance and avoidance from employees. The spread of COVID-19 compelled instructors and students to immediately transition all educational activities to take place online rather than undergoing the more gradual shift that was originally planned. To deal with the bad situation caused by the Covid-19, hybrid learning was employed. This paper explores students' perceptions towards hybrid learning implementation in a practical college in Vietnam. The research used a qualitative method. The samples were 250 students who were taking hybrid courses at the institution during the pandemic. Content analysis was used to process the qualitative data. The results reveal they were well-prepared with technology and stationery for the hybrid class. Flexibility, effectiveness, student engagement, convenience, and personalization are perceived benefits. Technical issues and distant student interaction must be addressed. Also, for onsite students, the fear of being infected by Corona virus and the distraction caused by the online group should also be considered. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to assess corporate zakat payment during the Covid-19 Pandemic Period. This is intriguing due to the fact that Covid-19 caused lockdown, recession, and financial crisis that could affect the company. Unlike business activities and performance which are significantly affected by locked down policies due to the Covid 19 Pandemic charitable activities including Corporate Zakat exhibit a more positive resilient response to continuously support those in need and affected by covid 19 during the pandemic period. This study employs a qualitative method based on the data provided. The outcome indicates that Covid-19 pandemic period had no impact on corporate zakat payment, as some businesses continued to pay zakat during the pandemic. This demonstrates that Covid-19 had no direct impact on zakat payments made by corporations. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a cloud business intelligence model for industrial SMEs. An initial model was developed to accomplish this, followed by validation and finalization of the cloud business intelligence model. Additionally, this research employs a mixed-techniques approach, including both qualitative and quantitative methods. This paper aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) Recognize the Cloud business intelligence concepts. (2) Identify the role of cloud BI in SMEs. (3) Identify the factors that affect the design and presenting a Cloud business intelligence model based on critical factors affecting SMEs during pandemic COVID-19. (4) Discuss the importance of Cloud BI in pandemic COVID-19 for SMEs. (5) Provide managerial implications for using Cloud BI effectively in Iran's SMEs. Design/methodology/approach: In the current study, an initial model was first proposed, and the cloud business intelligence model was then validated and finalized. Moreover, this study uses a mixed-methods design in which both qualitative and quantitative methods are used. The fuzzy Delphi Method has been applied for parameter validation purposes, and eventually, the Cloud business intelligence model has been presented through exploiting the interpretive structural modeling. The partial least squares method was also applied to validate the model. Data were also analyzed using the MAXQDA and Smart PLS software package. Findings: In this research, from the elimination of synonym and frequently repeated factors and classification of final factors, six main factors, 24 subfactors and 24 identifiers were discovered from the texts of the relevant papers and interviews conducted with 19 experts in the area of BI and Cloud computing. The main factors of our research include drivers, enablers, competencies, critical success factors, SME characteristics and adoption. The subfactors of included competitors pressure, decision-making time, data access, data analysis and calculations, budget, clear view, clear missions, BI tools, data infrastructure, information merging, business key sector, data owner, business process, data resource, data quality, IT skill, organizational preparedness, innovation orientation, SME characteristics, SME activity, SME structure, BI maturity, standardization, agility, balances between BI systems and business strategies. Then, the quantitative part continued with the fuzzy Delphi technique in which two factors, decision-making time and agility, were deleted in the first round, and the second round was conducted for the rest of the factors. In that step, 24 factors were assessed based on the opinions of 19 experts. In the second round, none of the factors were removed, and thus the Delphi analysis was concluded. Next, data analysis was carried out by building the structural self-interaction matrix to present the model. According to the results, adoptability is a first-level or dependent variable. Regarding the results of interpretive structural modeling (ISM), the variable of critical success factors is a second-level variable. Enablers, competencies and SME characteristics are the third-level and most effective variables of the model. Accordingly, the initial model of Cloud BI for SMEs is presented as follows: The results of ISM revealed the impact of SME characteristics on BI critical success factors and adoptability. Since this category was not an underlying category of BI;thus, it played the role of a moderating variable for the impact of critical success factors on adoptability in the final model. Research limitations/implications: Since this study is limited to about 100 SMEs in the north of Iran, results should be applied cautiously to SMEs in other countries. Generalizing the study's results to other industries and geographic regions should be done with care since management perceptions, and financial condition of a business vary significantly. Additionally, the topic of business intelligence in SMEs constrained the sample from the start since not all SMEs use business int lligence systems, and others are unaware of their advantages. BI tools enable the effective management of companies of all sizes by providing analytic data and critical performance indicators. In general, SMEs used fewer business intelligence technologies than big companies. According to studies, SMEs understand the value of simplifying their information resources to make critical business choices. Additionally, they are aware of the market's abundance of business intelligence products. However, many SMEs lack the technical knowledge necessary to choose the optimal tool combination. In light of the frequently significant investment required to implement BI approaches, a viable alternative for SMEs may be to adopt cloud computing solutions that enable organizations to strengthen their systems and information technologies on a pay-per-use basis while also providing access to cutting-edge BI technologies at a reasonable price. Practical implications: Before the implementation of Cloud BI in SMEs, condition of driver, competency and critical success factor of SMEs should also be considered. These will help to define the significant resources and skills that form the strategic edge and lead to the success of Cloud BI projects. Originality/value: Most of the previous studies have been focused on factors such as critical success factors in cloud business intelligence and cloud computing in small and medium-sized enterprises, cloud business intelligence adoption models, the services used in cloud business intelligence, the factors involved in acceptance of cloud business intelligence, the challenges and advantages of cloud business intelligence, and drivers and barriers to cloud business intelligence. None of the studied resources proposed any comprehensive model for designing and implementing cloud business intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises;they only investigated some of the aspects of this issue. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

Self-education skill is an essential skill to be improved, as well as being an important skill needed for students in schools and universities. And especially, in the covid period, the most focused skill is the self-study ability of students. The survey has been designed through surveying each group of students and individuals of each department in FPT University during the time students are studying online and at school. The research is completed using qualitative and quantitative methods. It can be concluded from the survey that, by switching to online learning platforms, the survey indicated that students improve their self-awareness and learn how to find and evaluate information sources online. However, there is still a small number of students who have problems with self-education. And this, there are causes such as weak self-perception, the guidance of teachers and mentors. The research aims to find out more available and flexible methods that give students a guide on how to improve their awareness about self - education and self - improvement after the pandemic through both direct means like quizzes and social experiments, and indirect means by reviewing written research from known authors and publishers. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Asian American students in higher education were faced not only with the move to online learning but the nuances that came with anti-Asian rhetoric and violence in the news. We wanted to understand how the sociopolitical effects of the past two years have affected Asian American engineering students through their experiences in the online setting, as well as highlight the gaps of Asian American engineering students in engineering education research. Using qualitative methods through semi-structured interviews with Asian and Asian American engineering students, we explore Asian and Asian American identity, and sociopolitical matters in the engineering classroom. To understand the views of Asian and Asian American students, we lay out the ways that racial and ethnic identity have been examined in engineering, along with Asian and Asian American identity formation. In this paper, we explore the background of race and equality in engineering and engineering education. Then we look at the results of our interviews, focusing on two main areas. First we look at how students formed social networks and build their identities in these online spaces. Then we look at the role of politicization in the classroom and in engineering and how it relates to Asian identity formation. We close this paper by speculating how Asian and Asian American identity can be better addressed and attended to within engineering education. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2022.

ABSTRACT

The experience of loss and grief during the COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to explore the connections between the individual and society through the use of the autoethnographic method. In writing this autoethnography, the authors confront questions about grieving as an individual and social process, and explore the importance of social norms in thinking about everyday events such as the death of a loved one. In this article, we discuss “grieving rules” as they pertain to “normal” incidences of death, and then explore what happens when extenuating circumstances such as a global pandemic make adherence to predictable norms difficult or impossible. While recent studies of grief related to the global pandemic focus on the survivors of COVID-19 victims, this study explores the social implications of losing a loved one during a pandemic when the death is not due to COVID-19. This autoethnography relies on grief experienced during the pandemic following a non-COVID death as a possible context for disenfranchised grief. © 2022 by The Regents of the University of California. ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of the research presented in this paper is to provide information on the common problems of healthy homes in the context of architectural design deficiencies. Especially because determining the status of a healthy house is particularly challenging if the design is poor. Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative methods, i.e. interviews, site visits and graphic elicitation diagramming were used in two different stages of data collection. They were then analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: The findings show that the architectural elements can have positive or negative effects on the health and safe environments. The quantity of doors and the use of transparent glass have largely contributed to the thermal transmission and increased indoor temperatures. The roof aluminium sheets and absence of vents inhibited indoor heat loss. This has led to discomfort and overuse of air-conditioning units, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic where most households stayed/worked from home. The inappropriate height of the ceiling and roof made it challenging for maintenance purpose, reducing safety levels, which could result in physical injuries. Originality/value: The concept of healthy homes is not new. Studies have been conducted in Western countries and in the field of healthcare. However, there is lack of study in built environment particularly in developing countries and inadequate inter-disciplinary and empirical research to connect the healthcare field. The pervasive and recurring design deficiencies in the construction industry remain a source of unhealthy homes, which must be addressed. Future investigations are necessary to expand the conclusions that can be drawn from this paper for health equity within the society and nation. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

This work in progress describes the study of a Mechanical Engineering Technology Program's faculty experiences in the immediate aftermath of COVID-19. The effects of COVID-19 upon various institutions are likely to be longstanding, as returning to what once was considered normal will never completely happen. As part of the engineering technology community, it is important to contribute to the knowledge base regarding the collective experience. Just as novel observations may serve to identify opportunities for advancement or disparities between populations, recurring observations can add to literature validating pedagogical phenomena. This study utilized explorative qualitative methods to gain preliminary insight into the experiences at a particular institution. Findings can be used to inform practice as we try to move forward in the new normalcies of engineering education. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2021

ABSTRACT

Healthcare professionals play important roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to evaluate nursing students' opinions about COVID-19. This study was planned using a descriptive phenomenological design. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form during individual interviews carried out through phone calls or online. After the interviews were recorded, they were documented. The study found that students experienced anxiety because of the pandemic, that they protect themselves through personal hygiene and isolation methods, that most of them found the social measures sufficient, that they were worried about their relatives, and that they wanted to go back to their social lives. Positive occupational value and investment in the health sector are positive effects of the pandemic on nursing, while an increased workload and the high risk of death are negative effects. Nursing students should be supported with both theoretical information and psychological support during the pandemic.
